Inadvertent mischief??

Asiatic Lions also known as Indian Lions are found in the Gir forests of Gujarat and in the surrounding areas. This species is declared as endangered by IUCN, international organisation working for nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. But there is an encouraging fact, according to the 2015 census, the total number of lions count was 523 which used to have 411 in year 2010. Increase in the number of lions has made the periphery of the villages more susceptible to risk for people residing there. In the last two years, huge number of lions has died of which some are unnatural deaths like they get electricity shock by coming in contact with live wires put up by farmers for the protection of their crops and falling of lions into the deep wells which are left open by farmers as well. This arises a question over the conservation of the biggest cats and for the safety of the people.

The coins thrown into the pool by people for their own good luck became bad luck for turtle as it swallowed the coins mistaking them as food and it became cause of its death. This is about Thailand turtle named "Omsin" which was recently in news, it underwent surgery after swallowing hundereds of coins.

Cash or Cashless: Moulding Slow

In the end of the last year everyone in the country had to face certain difficulties post-demonetisation as within no time, there made a statement by our PM Narindera Modi of using 500 and 1000 notes was not legal, on 9 Nov,2016. Almost 86% of the currency of the country was drawn out and whole economy was managing to survive. This was done to stash out black money and to increase transparency. It could be seen that it was the first step by the government to make people user friendly to adhere to the digital transactions. It proved to be right also, almost 65% of the people used to make digital transactions in the November & December,as reported by survey. But were the people actually transforming themselves completely and ready to use digital platforms. It doesn't seem so. As soon as new currency notes were put back into the market by government, the percentage of respondents remain almost one fourth in the months of January and February. Even though there are some sectors like online shopping, tourism, food purchase where people are interested to pay online but on the whole they are not even enticed by the cashbacks the companies are providing. It can be seen that people need time to mould themselves.

                                 Punjabi University, Patiala

It seems that every government tends to appoints its own man to run all the government organisations, including universities as well. The day before the formation of new government in Punjab, Vice-Chancellors(VCs) of Punjabi University, Patiala & Guru Nanak Dev University(GNDU), Amritsar resigned from the post citing personal reasons behind it. Professor AS Brar, who has become Vice Chancellor of the GNDU in 2009 got two extensions during his tenure; it is claimed by the teachers association of the university that it's because of his close associations with former Chief Minister of Punjab Prakash Singh Badal, he has been able to get extensions. Now he has appealed to chancellor of the university i.e.governor VP Singh Badnore to relieve him of all the operations, citing that his only son has not been in good condition health wise for quite sometime. Due to this he had been absent from the university since January, he had attended only major functions. On the other hand, Vice chancellor of Punjabi University Jaspal Singh who was appointed by Badal government in 2007 had got three extensions during his tenure. Now he has also asked for resignation, citing personal reasons behind it, he has also submitted his resignation to Chancellor o University i.e. governor VP Singh Badnore.

The Maternity Benefit Bill( Amendment) 2016

The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill 2016, which is recently passed in the Lok Sabha, replacing Maternity Benefit Act 1961 will raise the paid maternity leave for women from 12 weeks to 26 weeks in the organized sector for the first two children, is a welcome step. The maternity leave beyond the first two children will continue to be 12 weeks. It says 12 weeks’ paid leave will be granted to mothers adopting or having a child through surrogacy in all the establishments employing at least 10 people. Moreover, it also says every establishment employing atleast 50 people must  provide creche facilities for working mother either in office or in any place within a 500-metre radius. Such mothers will also be permitted to make  4 visits to take care of their child during working hours. Now it’s duty of organizations to convey the message to all the women working with them. The bill will now be sent to the President for his assent before it becomes an Act as it has already been passed in Rajya Sabha earlier. The amended law is expected to cover approximately 2 million women, covering minute percentage of the total working women all over the country. The Bill doesn’t apply to the women working in unorganized sector yet, where the only support available is a cash amount of Rs/- 6000 during pregnancy, conditionally. On the whole it has started bringing social change which is appreciable step in the right direction. But it has yet to cover major portion that is unorganized sector.

HAPPY HOLI

It's the day of fervor, festival Holi is being celebrated in every corner of the country. Everyone seems to be fascinated putting colors on one another, buckets full of color mixed water ,showing their own moves on music, distributing sweets especially Gujias, which is made by our moms. That is the gift of much awaited festival we celebrate every year with lot of energy, love and affection.
While celebrating the Holi in streets, stray dogs become inadvertently victims of our deeds. Most of us unaware of the fact that dogs do not have sweat glands like we people do. Their skin is different from the human skin. This is the reason that, when they got any color on their body, dry or wet, it starts to get absorbed in their skin. Colors which are made of toxic substances proved to be fatal.Their bodies get itchy and sometimes, helpless, they start licking the color which directly impacts their liver. Most of the pet owners do take care of these mentioned things and they don't let their dogs out of the home during festival season, protecting them from any misdeed.
The worse impact dogs got out of this is change in their behavior which includes restlessness and flapping of their heads.
A little care can make a big difference, unintentionally if we put any colors on dogs, their body could be washed with warm water, which will comfort them. Many animal welfare societies are also leading this move, they can also be consulted if necessary.
